Have you ever wondered how you could have a better software installation experience?  Read on for 5 basic tips that will help make software installations more successful:

  1. Know your administrator username and password.  Most software will require administrator rights to install.
  2. Make sure to read all promts for credentials.  Most of them that pop up will be asking for administrator right, although some will ask for network credentials, meaning it needs your full Rose email address and password.
  3. Read all directions thoroughly.  Many installation errors could be prevented by following directions completely.  Sometimes, when directions are not followed correctly, more time needs to be spent uninstalling and re-installing software.
  4. Uninstall all previous software versions.  This can be done by going to “Uninstall a program” and allowing the previous versions to uninstall completely
  5. Know which versions of software you need to install and be sure you have permissions to access that folder.  Most of the time, you will need the most current software version but it is best to check with your professor to verify the correct version.  Some software has installation restrictions and is only able to be installed by Service Desk personnel. If you see an empty folder on DFS, this is most likely the case.
  6. Have a strong internet connection.  Software installations can fail if the internet connection quits during installation.  If possible, use a wired internet connection.  Wired internet connections tend to allow software to install faster and there is less risk for connection failures.
