Managing Permissions

In Windows, a folder or file can have a list of user and group permissions associated with it. An administrator of the folder or file can add to the list, remove from the list, and change the permissions associated with each user or group in the list. If you are not an administrator of that space, you can contact the EIT Service Desk with any permission change requests.
Please note: Any permission changes you make to a folder will propagate to all files and folders within the main folder. Any folders you create within the main folder will also have the new permissions.

Adding a new user or group to the permissions list

  1. Right-click on the folder you wish to change and click Properties.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. In the window that appears, add a user or group to the permission list click by clicking the Add... button.
  4. In the window that appears, enter in the user or group and click OK.
    1. If you get a Name Not Found box, you entered an invalid username or group. For more information on users and groups see the section below.
You will need to edit the permissions of the newly added user or group.

Editing a user's or group's permissions

  1. Right-click on the folder you wish to change and click Properties.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Highlight the name you wish to edit under Group or user names.
  4. In the lower portion of the screen you should see a group of checkboxes. These are the current permissions for the highlighted user or group.
  5. To add a permission, check the box under Allow next to the permission name. To remove, uncheck the box under Allow next to the permission name.
    1. WARNING: It is not recommended that you use the Deny checkboxes unless you know what you are doing since it can have unintended effects. Simply unchecking the Allow checkbox will remove the user from that particular permission on the folder.
  6. When you are finished making changes, click the Apply button and then the OK button.
